Our Story
A Legacy of Excellence
For decades, Bates Academy has been Detroit's home for gifted and talented education. Our story is one of dedication, achievement, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every child.
Our History
Bates Academy Founded
Bates Academy was established as part of Detroit Public Schools, named after Alonzo W. Bates, a distinguished educator and community leader who championed academic excellence for all students. The school quickly became known for its rigorous gifted and talented program.
A Beacon of Excellence
Through the decades, Bates Academy earned a reputation as one of the finest K-8 schools in Michigan. Its gifted and talented program attracted families from across Detroit, and its graduates consistently excelled at the city's top high schools.
Expanding the Legacy
As generations of Bates graduates achieved success in every field imaginable, the informal alumni network grew. Classmates stayed connected through reunions, word of mouth, and eventually through social media groups.
The Alumni Association is Born
Recognizing the power of a formalized alumni community, a group of dedicated graduates established the Bates Academy Alumni Association. The Charter Members program launched, events were organized, and the mission to preserve and advance the Bates legacy was formalized.

Honoring Alonzo W. Bates
Born October 7, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, Alonzo W. Bates was raised in Eastlake Baptist Church and graduated from Southeastern High School in 1958, where he was a multi-sport athlete.
He attended Ferris State before transferring to Alabama State University, where he graduated in 1964. Known as “Big Catch,” he was the catcher on the Alabama State baseball team and a four-year starter. In 1961, he was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Beta Upsilon Chapter.
During his time in Alabama, Alonzo became a civil rights activist, participating in voter registration drives and peaceful protests against segregation. He built lasting relationships with Rev. Jim Holly and Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Returning to Detroit during the turbulent 1960s, Alonzo W. Bates became a community leader whose vision for academic excellence lives on in every student who walks through the doors of the school that bears his name. His legacy continues through the Bates Academy Alumni Association and the thousands of graduates who carry the Bates tradition of excellence forward.
