Early Life and Education

  • Born: October 7, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan.
  • Childhood: Baptized and raised in Eastlake Baptist Church; a bright, energetic child molded by love, discipline, and community values.
  • Education: Graduated from Southeastern High School in 1958, where he shone as a multi-sport athlete. Continued his education and athletic passion at Ferris State University, then transferred to Alabama State University, graduating in 1964.

Athletic Achievements

  • Baseball: Known as “Big Catch” for his skill and leadership as a catcher. Demonstrated exceptional talent and determination, earning a spot and becoming a four-year starter on the Alabama State University baseball team.
  • Fraternity: Initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Beta Upsilon Chapter in 1961, highlighting his commitment to brotherhood and community service.

Civil Rights Involvement

  • Advocacy: Engaged deeply in the Civil Rights movement during his years in Montgomery, Alabama. Worked tirelessly on voter registration drives and participated in peaceful protests to integrate segregated establishments.
  • Partnerships: Forged lasting relationships with future leaders like The Reverend Jim Holly and The Reverend Jesse Jackson, solidifying his role in the movement for justice and equality.

Return to Detroit

  • Community Leadership: Bates’s return to Detroit marked the beginning of his profound impact on the city’s African American community and beyond. His leadership was crucial during the turbulent 1960s, guiding Detroit through challenges and towards a future of greater inclusion and opportunity.
