In Memoriam
Beverly Gibson
Early Principal, Bates Academy
Dr. Beverly Gibson served as one of the early principals of Bates Academy during its formative years after the school's founding in 1981. Under her leadership, Bates Academy began establishing the culture of academic excellence that has defined the school for over four decades.
As principal, Dr. Gibson helped shape the gifted and talented program that would make Bates a destination school for Detroit's brightest students. She was part of the pioneering leadership — alongside Dr. Otis Stanley and Mrs. Bernice Edwards — that built the school from its first 200 students in a shared building to the thriving institution it became.
The Alumni Association invites those who knew Dr. Gibson to share their memories. Every story, every photograph, every moment you remember helps us honor her life and preserve her place in the Bates Academy story.
